Why I am a strong supporter of natural selection

Normally, I like to keep this blog about knitting, dyeing and other artsy things... but I have to share something I experienced today.

As many of you know, in addition to the Wandering Cat enterprise, I have have two "real" jobs. Well one "real" job and another job whose purpose was to "get me out of debt" but has turned into "keep me in yarn and shoes". In Job #1, I'm a writer. In Job #2 I'm a receptionist for a car dealership.

This interesting little experience happened at the dealership tonight.

The phone rings

I answer, "Good evening (insert dealership name here)"

The woman on the other end says "What?"

I repeat: "Good evening (insert dealership name here)"

She says "What's that?"

I reply "We're a car dealership"

Woman: "Well what did you want?"

Me: "Umm, you called us."

Woman: "No, someone called me earlier and left me a message."

Me: "Okay, well I'm the main receptionist. There are about 25 other people in the building. Who did you want to speak to?"

Woman: "I don't know."

Me: "Was the call for sales or service?"

Woman. "I don't know."

Me: "Did they leave you a name?"

Woman: "I don't know."

Me: "Well what did the message say?"

Woman: "The message?"

Me: "Yes, you said someone left you a message..."

Woman: "Oh. I didn't listen to it. I just called the number back."

Then there was a long pause as I let her figure it out for herself...

Woman: "Well I guess I better listen to the message."

She never called back.

Oh dear. Poor woman. I do hope she was just having a short moment of no brain function and that that's not a permanent state.

That is too funny! Once in awhile at work someone will call, and I'll answer and they say, "Did you call here?" No saying who they are. At least there are only four or five of us there instead of 25!

I am nodding and laughing...because I used to get the same thing....back when call display first came out I was a receptionist for an insurance brokerage...we had up to 40 brokers, most of whom would "cold call" people in the evenings...they'd call and only talk to people who answered, but not leave a message on a machine...well the next day, these people would see the number on their call display and call me asking why I'd called them...this was always a fun experience, because most of them would be quite rude even after I had explained what was going on, and they would tell me not to call them again..I would tell them it could have been one of 40 people, but of course being on the front line I always took the blame...then the guys would call them again and the process would repeat the next day...good times...
