Oh, Peno!

When I went to buy little Miss Ezra her Curl, Petsmart had a sale on - buy one scratcher, get one 50% off. And Peno was in sad need of a new scratcher
I bought it for her when I first adopted her almost 10 years ago (hard to believe it's been that long!). The saddle on top is her favourite place to hang out. We've always kept the scratcher in a dark corner, and it gives her just enough height to smack her brothers in the face if they get too close. But as you can see, it's in pretty rough shape - she's not just down to the wood...
But almost right through it.

When I told Dave of my plan - he told me not to bother - the current one is just fine. But he's not the one getting splinters in his feet every time the cat hair needs to be swept from the corner...

So, I went ahead and got one as close to this one as I could. Peno was ahead of me as I was carrying it up the stairs, and when we got to her corner, she turned around and HISSED at it (Peno never hisses!).
Of course, Dave was standing nearby, so he let out a smug "Toldya!"

Not to be deterred, I covered it in catnip. No luck. I figured she'd go in it eventually, but night after night, she's downstairs on the couch, looking depressed. So I finally got fed-up, picked her up (which she hates!), carried her upstairs and put her in it.
"What is this thing? Where's my other one?!?"
"Fine... I'll sit in it..."
"...but don't expect me to like it."

She stayed in it for a couple hours, while I read my book, keeping half an eye on her from the bedroom. but tonight..... tonight she's back on the couch looking depressed...

...sigh....

Poor baby is all out of sorts. Cats are such creatures of habit. That's how mine were with the new fountain but now they love it. Maybe she will come around too.

Cats sure have a mind of their own, don't they?

Oh my ......they want what they want, don't they!

Maybe one of your other cats will enjoy the new sitting post.

Cats are too much.

She's like my husband, doesn't like change AT all! Hope she learns to love it. Maybe convince her the other cats will use it if she doesn't? Sibling rivalry?

I see where you're coming from. I would've done the same thing. My husband would've had the same response. I hope she comes 'round and learns to love it. Meanwhile, I love her contrary photos. hehe.

It took several weeks for our cats to ACCEPT and love the new post. Our old one looked like a coconut shredded.
Catnip....and May I suggest throwing a sheet over it ...then they play more around it. It is more like a slumber party.

Well, you can tell her to stay off it because it's the boys' toy - that usually works. Or just get her a cardboard box. (Cats prefer them to anything else in the entire world, in my experience...) Maybe put the box on top of the seat?

But it doesn't smell right! Can you rescue part of the old one and put it on the new one to impart the right smell?

Geez! She sure is strong willed. None of the other cats hopped on it?

Ha. I guess change doesn't sit well with Peno. The facial expressions are priceless. I hope it doesn't take long for the new post to become acceptable!!

Feliway spray? She's appalled that it's not impregnated with her own personal cat-stink! :)
