While we won't have starling babies to watch grow, we do have some other new neighbours.
I almost tripped over them when I was out weeding the tree garden the other day.
Don't worry - they aren't hurt or abandoned. They are fledgling Mourning Doves. They are too big for the nest, but not quite ready to fly and be on their own. So they will hand out on the ground for a few days, stretching their wings, hopping around and learning to fly. Momma and Daddy are never far away.
They were up on the roof keep and eye on things.
As soon as I backed off, Momma flew down to check them over...
... and give them a meal.
All the eating made them sleepy....
But the little fledglings are getting too big to snuglgle under Momma.
That doesn't stop them from trying!

So sweet.
Omg...that is the cutest thing!
So so cute. Ive seen doves behave like that as babies. Good to know its all normal!
Well that's just the cutest thing ever! Great job capturing it for us too!
What a neat sight-thanks for sharing and making the whole story of their day! We have tons of doves but I don't get to see them up close like this; my front yard cat thinks it is her duty to keep birds up in the trees and away from my feeders!
Patty O'Malley killed one mourning dove last year, and I don't remember seeing any this year. I was so sad that morning, as I found the corpse and the mate was overhead making such sad noises! I moved the body off of the back deck, and Patty brought it back!
