Babies, babies everywhere!

There's a bit of a baby boom happening in my circle right now - four in the making - two friends and two co-workers.

The first up is a girl to my co-worker - due this winter, so something warm and cozy was in order.
I've opted for Mom's Shawl Collared Baby Sweater in Big Cat (colour is Miss Lillykins). I've knit this sweater before, and it's a great quick baby knit - perfect for boys or girls. Just the sleeves and collar left to go.

For the two friends (one due December, one due March) I want to make blankets. After seeing the Yarn Harlot's gorgeous baby blanket - I'm thinking something similar - nice and heirloom-y. Any suggestions?

I like matinee jackets for wee ones, along the lines of this http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-layette-3
The one I had for my babies is a similar design, it's been through 2 babies so far and is being held onto for the next generation. Cardigans are much easier to get babies into than jerseys.

Wow that blanket from Yarn Harlot is beautiful!! I've only ever made crochet or garter stitch blankets for babes, so I don't have any wonderful suggestions for you.

I really enjoyed making Umaro - it was really striking but very thick and chunky.

I also really enjoyed the Estonian Starflower lace blanket - much lighter, lacier, heirloom-y-er.

The next blanket I make will likely be Jared Flood's Shale baby blanket. Because Shale really is a classic, isn't it!

My only suggestion is that you might want to go for something smaller than the Harlot. Babies don't really need anything quite that epic in the beginning. Takes less time too!
