Instant gratification

Next time I go crazy with the flower seeds, please remind me that I'm really about instant gratification, and seeds are not the way to go for me....

After planting all the seedlings, bulbs and picking up a few small items last week, I told myself there was really nothing more I needed for the gardens, with the exception of a tomato plant.

But, just before I left for the garden centre to get that tomato plant, I took a peak at the back garden. The squirrels ran off with all but one of the sunflowers, and as I predicted only about half the other seedlings took... and everything was just so small.....

So. I got my tomato plant but....
I might have got a few other things....
I adore irises, but all the gardens centers around here only seem to carry are plain purple ones.  I was very excited when I found this red one
... and it won't be too long before I see it in person.
Bee Balm was on my "to-get" list this year, but I was having trouble finding it. I had to search through almost every pot in the garden centre... but there it finally was! It's suppose to attract hummingbirds - I really hope some find their way to my yard.
This pin cushion flower was right beside it, so it found its way into my cart.
And then I came across these red Susans. I love Susans because they bloom right into fall. It will be nice to have these on the opposite side of the yard.
This Salvia was almost ready to bloom... and the garden needs some colour.... so along theycame.
and these little English Daisies were just too cute to walk by.

Some more poppies and a Liatris plant might have followed me home too.
... that's better. And by the end of the summer.... it'll be amazing! And sine the bee balm, pincushion flower, milkweed, and salvia all attract butterflies too... I think this will be butterfly garden!

Oh - and I did get that tomato...

I went nuts in the garden center myself this week. It's so easy to do. Before I knew it I had a cart full of big clay pots and plants to put in them. It's been so gloomy here I needed an infusion of color.
My grandfather had an iris bed that had every color you could think of in it. You just don't see all those spectacular colors anymore. I wonder why.

I love your flower choices Valarie. We just proclaimed 4 rose bushes dead in the garden. I thought they were going to come back but...no.
It is almost time to plant here. Im still cautious due to the late frostdates in our ZONE!

We've got an iris farm here in Canterbury, NZ. When I want a new iris I head out there during their open season and come back with something beautiful. I normally get the full-sized ones now as they seem to do better. My favourite is Supreme Sultan which is a lovely gold and brownish burgundy. I also have a couple of dark purples.
